What is dental sedation?

Dental sedation is the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It can be used for patients who experience dental anxiety or for patients who are undergoing long dental procedures that could cause pain, such as a surgical tooth extraction.

If the idea of getting a tooth extracted or even visiting us for a routine cleaning gives you fear or anxiety, talk to your dentist to find out if dental sedation is an option for you.

At Live Well Dental, we offer both oral sedative and nitrous oxide sedation options to our patients.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask that is placed over your nose. This medication provides a calming effect, but you will be awake and able to communicate with your dentist.

It also tends to lessen anxiety, increase pain threshold, reduce gag reflex, and make time seem to pass more quickly.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedatives are pills or liquids prescribed by your dentist. The medication is taken orally in advance of your dental appointment. Oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate depending on the dose prescribed by your dentist.

Oral sedation will leave you groggy and you may fall asleep during the procedure but you can typically be woken by a gentle shake.
