Screenings for Early Detection

Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues, and although oral cancer is more likely in older adults, it can actually affect people of all ages. The main objective of oral cancer screening tests is to detect signs early for a better chance of a successful cure.

Our dentists screen patients for cancerous and precancerous signs during every routine dental examination.

What does oral cancer screening involve?

Your dentist will use gloved hands to check your jaws, neck and face for any swelling, bumps or lumps. We also use diagnostic tools like the VELscope® to detect hidden abnormalities that may not be visible during a physical exam.

Oral cancer tests are a preventive measure. If further diagnosis is required, your dentist will refer you to a doctor or specialist.
