Inlays & Onlays vs. Dental Fillings

When a tooth is damaged and there is limited tooth structure, fillings may not be the right solution. Inlays and onlays are typically used to restore teeth that are compromised due to injuries, trauma, or decay.

Inlays and onlays are more substantial than dental fillings and provide strength and support to the tooth. They also do not require as much filing down of tooth enamel as dental crowns.

The primary difference between an onlay and an inlay is that an onlay will cover the cusp of the tooth, whereas an inlay only fills the area between the cusps.

Your dentist at Live Well Dental will evaluate your tooth to determine the nature and extent of the damage and recommend the best solution for your situation.

How are inlays and onlays placed?

After shaving down a little bit of tooth structure, your dentists will take an impression of your tooth before fastening a temporary inlay or onlay.

Once the permanent restoration is ready, we place it onto your tooth and use strong dental adhesive to secure it firmly onto the tooth surface.

With the right care, dental inlays and onlays can last for 10 or more years. The lifespan of an inlay or onlay is determined by chewing forces on the tooth, your oral hygiene, the nerves inside the tooth, and the position of the tooth.

Proper oral hygiene, including regular preventive care visits, along with avoiding hard or sticky foods can prolong the life of an inlay or onlay.

Benefits of Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays, also known as ‘indirect restorations’ or ‘partial crowns,’ can be used to fix gaps, chips, cracks and even stains.

They are made of durable materials like porcelain or gold and can offer a snugger fit than dental fillings. Porcelain inlays and onlays can be colour-matched to your teeth for a natural-looking appearance. Inlays and onlays are commonly used to:

  • Replace damaged fillings
  • Enhance your smile
  • Seal large cavities
  • Restore decayed teeth
